🌳 The Art of Sanding: From 40 Grit to 400 Grit – Revealing the Beauty in Solid Timber By Be You Bespoke Furniture Ltd

When people see a finished table, they see smooth edges, rich grain, and a flawless finish.
What they don’t see is the hours of preparation that happen before any stain or protective coat is applied.
At Be You Bespoke Furniture Ltd, sanding isn’t just a step in the process — it’s where the transformation truly begins.
Starting at 40 Grit – Shaping the Foundation
Raw timber arrives full of character — saw marks, uneven surfaces, slight imperfections.
We begin with 40 grit, a coarse abrasive designed to level the surface, remove machining marks, and flatten joins. This stage is physical. It’s noisy, dusty, and demands patience. You’re not polishing — you’re sculpting.
This is where the structure is refined and the piece begins to take its true form.
Moving Through the Grits – Refining the Surface
From 40 grit, we work progressively through the grades:
60 grit
80 grit
120 grit
180 grit
240 grit
320 grit
400 grit
Each stage removes the scratches left by the previous grit. Skipping steps simply isn’t an option — it shows in the final finish.
This gradual refinement is what brings out the natural grain patterns in the timber. As the surface becomes smoother, the figure of the wood starts to reveal itself — the knots, the cathedral arches, the subtle movement in the grain.
400 Grit – Where the Timber Comes Alive
By the time we reach 400 grit, the surface feels almost silky to the touch.
This isn’t just about smoothness — it’s about respect for the material. Fine sanding closes the grain evenly, allowing stain or oil to penetrate consistently and enhancing depth and tone.
The difference between a quickly sanded piece and one that’s been taken through the full process is immediately visible — and more importantly, it’s felt.
The Effort Behind Every Piece
Sanding is one of the most time-consuming parts of building solid timber furniture. It requires focus, consistency, and care. It’s also where craftsmanship truly shows.
There are no shortcuts in bespoke work. Every surface, edge, and detail is worked by hand to ensure that when the finish goes on, it enhances the timber — not hides imperfections.
That’s the difference between mass-produced and handmade.
At Be You Bespoke Furniture Ltd, we don’t rush the process — because quality lives in the preparation.
